Is CompTIA Security+ Worth It in 2026?
Is CompTIA Security+ Worth It in 2026?
Short answer: for most people trying to break into cybersecurity, yes — and it's usually the first certification worth your money. But "worth it" depends on where you're starting from. Here's the honest case, including who should not rush into it.
What Security+ actually is
CompTIA Security+ is a vendor-neutral, entry-level cybersecurity certification. It validates the core skills to secure networks, devices, and data: recognizing threats and attacks, applying cryptography and identity controls, designing secure architecture, and handling day-to-day security operations. The current exam, SY0-701, is up to 90 questions in 90 minutes and includes hands-on performance-based questions — you have to do, not just recall.
Why it's usually worth it
- It's the credential employers screen for. Security+ shows up in more entry-level cybersecurity job postings than any other single certification. It's the one that gets your resume past the first filter.
- It's DoD-recognized. Security+ satisfies U.S. Department of Defense 8140/8570 baseline requirements for several roles, which matters a lot for government and contractor jobs.
- It's broad on purpose. It gives you the vocabulary and mental model for everything that comes after — SOC work, penetration testing, cloud security. Later certifications feel less overwhelming because Security+ built the frame.
- It renews the stack. Earning a higher CompTIA cert later automatically renews Security+ beneath it, so it keeps paying off as you advance.
Who should wait
Security+ isn't step one for a total beginner. It assumes you understand networking and basic IT. If terms like subnet, DNS, or TCP/IP are fuzzy, spend time on Network+ (or equivalent knowledge) first — otherwise you'll be memorizing security concepts without the ground under them, and it shows on exam day.
How hard is it, really?
It's achievable for a motivated beginner in roughly 6–10 weeks of consistent study, but it's not a memorization test. The performance-based questions assume you've touched real tools and can reason through a scenario. Candidates who only read pass at noticeably lower rates than those who add hands-on practice — even a simple home lab with a couple of virtual machines makes a difference.
The verdict
If you want into cybersecurity and you have (or are building) basic networking knowledge, Security+ is the highest-return certification you can earn in 2026. It's the one that turns "interested in security" into "screened in for interviews." The trick is to prepare with current SY0-701 material and real practice — not a 2023 study guide and a prayer.
